Below are a few of the common questions I get. If your question isn’t addresssed here, don’t hesitate to drop a line. I’d love to hear from you!
How long does an edit typically take?
The length of your edit depends on a couple of factors: how long your novel is, and what type of edit you’re looking for. Generally speaking, beta reads take 10 to 14 days, while developmental, content, and copy edits take 2 to 3 weeks. If you’ve hired me for a full editing package, the first edit (content) will take two to three weeks, and then you’ll have as much time as you need to go through your revision. We’ll set a target date for you to have that revision completed and you’ll be on my calendar for that time. If you can’t make the deadline, don’t sweat it; we simply reevaluate, and set a date farther in the future before getting together for the subsequent copy edit.
Do I have to pay you in full up front for my edit?
In a word, no. Once we have connected and decided we’ll work well together, I’ll get your edit on my calendar. There is a $250 deposit to secure your spot. That $250 is fully refundable up until 48 hours before your edit is set to begin; if you need to postpone at that time, the $250 is transferred to a future date. Half of the full amount for the job is due before I begin your edit (less the $250 deposit). The remainder is due once the job is complete. At that time, you’ll receive an email from me to let you know the edit is done, along with a PayPal invoice. Once the invoice is paid, you’ll receive the completed edit and we’ll set a time for a Skype exit interview if you elect to have one.
What if I don't agree with your edit?
I strive to provide edits that combine humor with honesty and compassion, so that ideally you’re not left feeling hopeless or defensive when you receive your edit. If, however, you are unhappy with the quality of your edit, a Skype interview will be scheduled so that we can address your concerns directly. If at that point you still feel you did not receive what you were initially promised, a refund will be issued.
Are there any genres you prefer not to edit?
At this point, I prefer not to edit horror or anything with a lot of violence or gore, and I don’t edit memoir. While I don’t edit a lot of nonfiction, I will happily jump aboard for the right project – particularly anything relating to animals or the environment.
Do you offer sample edits?
I do. I offer sample edits of up to the first 2500 words of a manuscript, providing both a content and copy edit of that material for $25. Just email me to schedule your sample edit today.
